SIUC's Department of Geography and Environmental Resources focuses on environmental management at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Faculty expertise is in water resources, land use, environmental sustainability, and geospatial techniques. Field work, use of computers, and internships are prominent components of the integrated environmental problem-solving approach in both our under-graduate and graduate programs.

Earth Extravaganza!
Geography students volunteer


Geography students volunteered for the Earth Extravaganza on May 1st, a wrap up event for a weekend of Beautify Southern Illinois Days. While open to the public, the event was targeted for local children and their families. The SIUC Student recreation Center and the Beautify Southern Illinois Student Alliance sponsored the fun afternoon of hands-on, ecology-themed activities to enhance environmental awareness and exposure for area youngsters.

Receives AAG Mather Paper of the Year Award


Justin Schoof is this year's recipient of the Association of American Geographers Climate Specialty Group John Russell Mather Paper of the Year Award for his paper, "Development of Daily Precipitation Projections for the United States Based on Probabilistic Downscaling," published in the Journal of Geophysical Research.

Makayla Trotter receives National Geographic Internship

Senior Makayla Trotter, a geography and environmental resources major, will head to Washington, D.C., next fall as a National Geographic intern in the Education Division. The Saluki Times article. More of Makayla's accomplishments can be found on the Sustainability SIUC webpage.

 

SIUC Earns Spot in Princeton Review's Green Guide

SIUC has made its first appearance in the Princeton Review's Guide to Green Colleges: 2011 Edition. SIUC's thriving student groups along with many sustainability efforts were factors in our inclusion along with 310 other universities. Saluki Times article. Daily Egyptian article.

 

Geography Club and Faculty Member Receive Outstanding Awards

The Geography Club is the 2011 receipient of the SIUC Outstanding Registered Student Organization Award for outstanding contributions and commitment to SIUC and the community. Geography faculty member, Dr. Julie Weinert, was awarded the 2011 Outstanding RSO Advisor Honorable Mention for outstanding contributions to the Geography Club and SIUC. Recognitions were presented at the Student Involvement and Leadership Development's annual Leadership Celebration on April 20, 2011.

 

Green Roof Installation: Geography's Weather Station Receives New Home

The first green roof on the SIUC campus and region was installed recently with help from faculty and students from several departments and colleges. Walkways made of recycled glass fall between native vegetation planted to reduce water runoff and reduce heating and cooling costs on the Agriculture Building. The installation of Geography's weather station will provide an ideal educational and research tool for our students and faculty. See the "Up On The Roof" @ SIUC" video.

Spring Sustainability Projects

Geography students Brooke Lopeman, Kim Rowan, Maykayla Trotter, and Laura Williams are participants in the Campus Sustainability Project Intern Program that is funded through the campus Green Fund. For a list of Spring 2011 projects, see the Saluki Times article.

 

Going Green - Living Learning Community

This Living Learning Community is ideal for students interested in climate change and sustainability. Students will participate in projects designed to develop sustainable solutions to campus environmental problems. Students will also work with campus groups including EcoDawgs and LOGIC (Local Organic Garden Initiative of Carbondale).

 

Campus Sustainability

We support a more sustainable campus by increasing the efficiency of resource and energy usage and by reducing waste. A geography faculty member and a geography student work to bring it together in one website.

 

Intro to Geosciences: Project Upward Bound

Assistant Professor Matthew Therrell and Associate Professor Justin Schoof continue the introduction to the geosciences for the residential Project Upward Bound in the summers of 2010 and 2011. The Saluki Times article.
