Just a little note to catch you up with me
since I saw you last at the alumni dinner in Carbondale a few
years back. My wife Krystyna and I have moved to Virginia Beach,
VA where I have accepted a position with the US Navy as a
Community Planner/GIS Specialist. I am taking an active role by
getting the Navy up to speed with GIS. I have also finished my
PhD in Geography from the University of Missouri at Columbia. I
am in a career ladder program that permits me to move around to
the different naval bases inside Hampton Roads. This helps one
learn the different business lines of the Navy and each of
their roles for the active duty personnel. So, in part, I help
design new ports and piers for new super carriers and their
fleet. I never realized just how big these carriers are until I
got to walk around on one of them.
Upon completion of this program, I will be
permanently assigned somewhere where the Atlantic fleet has a
port. It will probably be Norfolk, where I am presently working.
I have been told by my supervisor that I could go to Europe and
do a tour over there for five years and my job here would be
here waiting for me. I might be also teaching at Old Dominion
University in the near future if they decide to add more GIS
classes within the geography department. |
