Welcome to Dr. Tonny J. Oyana's Homepage Dr.Oyana is an Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director at the Southern Illinois University, where he teaches Geographic Information Systems (GIS), GIScience, Cartography and Geographic Visualization courses, among others. He obtained his Doctorate of Philosophy in Geography with a concentration in GIS at the State University of New York at Buffalo; Master of Science in GIS at the National University of Ireland; and Bachelor of Science with Education at the University of Dar-es- Salaam, Tanzania. Dr. Oyana’s research is under the broad umbrella of Geographic Information Science. His current research specifically centers on visualization and cartography, spatial epidemiology, applying GIS techniques to the subfields of disease surveillance and monitoring, bioterrorism, and environmental health and exposure. Dr. Oyana has also developed a significant research interest in emerging interdisciplinary topics. He is expanding his extensive knowledge of geography and algorithms to biomedical applications and disease informatics. Presently, Dr. Oyana is leading a major broadband mapping initiative for Connect SI. Dr. Oyana has over twelve years of demonstrated research and academic experience.
