Welcome to Dr. Tonny J. Oyana's Homepage
Dr.Oyana is an Associate
Professor and XSEDE Campus Champion
at
the Southern Illinois University,
where
he teaches
Geographic Information Systems (GIS), GIScience, Cartography and Geographic
Visualization courses, among others. He obtained his Doctorate of Philosophy in Geography
with a concentration in GIS at the State University of New York at Buffalo; Master of Science in GIS at the National University of Ireland; and Bachelor of Science with Education at the University of Dar-es- Salaam, Tanzania.
Dr. Oyana’s research and teaching interests include Geographic Information Science and Spatial Analytical Methods. Within these areas, he has several substantive foci, including GIS, spatial analysis, visualization and cartographic design, and spatial epidemiology. His core research focuses on three lines of inquiry: (1) establishing the relationship between environmental health and exposure, (2) advancing GIS methods, algorithm design, and spatial analytical methods, and (3) understanding factors that contribute towards land systems change. Dr. Oyana has also developed a significant research interest in emerging interdisciplinary topics and works with very large-scale spatial datasets. He is expanding his extensive knowledge of geography, data analytics, and algorithms to solve complex problems. Most recently, Dr. Oyana led a major broadband mapping initiative and co-authored a position paper on cadastral resurvey and modernization plans for the East African Region.
